COCA Restaurants - Not just Steamboat but Thai food too

3 July, 2008 (16:53) | Non-Alcoholic, Petaling Jaya, Beef, Thai, Fish, Restaurants - Asian, Soups, Rice, Seafood, Fruits, Poultry | By: Pink Parisian

When I was first approached by Andrea (of Coca) to visit Coca Restaurants I was a little sceptical, because my memory of Coca was their steamboats and I wasn’t quite sure just how exciting a steamboat (hot pot) would be. However, I gave in to her persistence and I’m glad I did because I’ve discovered that Coca Restaurants is not just about the steamboat, they have an extensive ala carte and set menu of (mostly) Thai-style food too.

Coca Restaurants is presently found in 2 locations, both in the Klang Valley for now. One is in Subang Parade in Subang and the other is in 1 Utama shopping centre in Bandar Utama. There were 2 others in Bangar Shopping Centre and KL Plaza but Coca has since pulled out of both those shopping centres. There is talk of opening another in Kuala Lumpur soon, so we’ll have to wait for that one. I’m told it will be quite an exciting concept. :)

Anyway, I dropped by the Coca Restaurant in Subang Parade one evening for dinner. The Coca Restaurant in Subang Parade is located a few doors away from Parkson department store and a short walk up from Friday’s. You can’t miss the entrance. It looks small from the outside but once inside, it is large and there are many tables of different sizes to fit any group size. I’m told that on week days, they average 8-10 tables and weekends are very busy. So, you might like to make a reservation if you plan to visit on a weekend.

Coca Restaurant is first and foremost a very comfortable steamboat restaurant. On week days, they have a buffet steamboat menu where for RM58++ an adult you can eat all you can from a set menu. There was a private function on the day I was there and I supposed the group of young people were making full use of the steamboat buffet. You can also order additional food and drinks from a separate ala carte menu. This post is picture heavy so be duly warned! :)

Beef Noodles and Seafood Noodles in Restoran Fatty Sang, Kepong

2 July, 2008 (18:11) | Kuala Lumpur, Beef, Light Meal, Coffee Shops, Seafood, Chinese, Noodles | By: Pink Parisian

I sometimes like having a bowl of seafood noodles and the most famous seafood noodles in Kuala Lumpur are in Yu Ai, which costs a bomb at RM15.90 a bowl. Crazy ridiculous prices! So, when I found one in Kepong that cost only RM5.50 for a large bowl of seafood and noodles, I knew I had to tell the world about it.

Restoran Fatty Sang has stalls selling noodles in the day and tai chow (cooked dishes) food at night. I’ve never eaten there at night, but I sometimes make the longish drive to Kepong to have the seafood noodles and beef noodles (Ngau Lam Min - Cantonese). Restoran Fatty Sang is located near the Tai Thong Restaurant in Kepong. If you come down the road towards Kepong from Kuala Lumpur, it is before the Carrefour. On your left will be a turning in, with a Shell petrol station at the corner. You can’t miss Restoran Fatty Sang as you enter the road.

There are a few noodles stalls in Fatty Sang, but my must have recommendations are the seafood noodle and beef noodles. (more pictures after the jump!)

Nyonya Pineapple Tarts

1 July, 2008 (09:55) | Melaka, Cookies | By: Pink Parisian

What is visiting Melaka (Malacca) without having some traditional Nyonya cookies? My favourite cookie of all is the Nyonya Pineapple Tart or what I call the “Open Pineapple Tarts”; so called because the jam is visible and placed in the middle of the pastry, instead of being rolled up inside the pastry. I call those “Pineapple Jam rolls”

Pineapple Tarts are common during Chinese New Year, but are now easily found at other times of the year. Pineapple Tarts are popular in Melaka as the Baba-Nyonya people there have popularized this cookie as one of their own, especially this style of “open tarts”.

I bought a box of these pineapple tarts from a little stall for RM7 for 10. They are about 2″ in diameter and although the pineapple jam was nice, the pastry wasn’t quite what I liked. Still, it was a nice little souvenir to take home from Melaka to my brother who loves these!
