Kai Yong Chicken Rice - Petaling Street
Chicken rice. You can’t go anywhere in Kuala Lumpur without bumping into at least one chicken rice stall. What hot dogs are to New York, chicken rice is to Kuala Lumpur. And the hunt is always on for the best chicken rice in town.
Chicken rice in this context are the Hainanese style chicken rice with steamed chicken and flavoured rice. I don’t see the point of eating steamed chicken with plain rice. I know flavoured rice is unhealthy but hey, what’s the point of eating chicken rice otherwise eh?
My favourite chicken rice stall in Kuala Lumpur (and for me, one of the best chicken rice in Kuala Lumpur) is in Petaling Street - Kai Yong Chicken Rice.

Kai Yong Chicken Rice is located in a row of pre-war shops just off the main Petaling Street shopping area. This is in the same row of shops where Nam Heong Chicken Rice is, facing the old Furama Hotel. Parking is impossible so park inside the Furama Hotel basement car park and just walk across the road.
The shop is pretty much bare bones and no frills. All you see is an empty shop with tables and chairs and a stall out front with the steamed chicken hanging in the glass enclosure. The servers communicate by yelling at each other. Typical coffeeshop style.
For steamed chicken you have a choice of “kampung chicken” (free range chicken) or regular chicken. I normally just go for the regular chicken because their chicken is not soft like those found in most places. The chicken has bite.

The rice is seriously one of the best I’ve had anywhere. Its fragrant and nicely flavoured yet isn’t very oily. I eat mine drizzled liberally with thick sweet soy sauce. Its the best way to enjoy chicken rice!

Here’s what I had on my last visit. That’s a 2 person portion of chicken, spicy and sour vegetable (choi kiok) and meat balls in soup. I think the whole meal came up to about RM22 or so. The spicy and sour vegetable isn’t very special but the draw here is the chicken. It is cooked just right, and flavoursome.
The old man out front chopping the chicken is the owner of the place. I was told that he was originally the chief cook in Nam Heong Chicken Rice but left to set up his own (as they do). They have the usual extras of asam fish, boiled bean sprouts and some mutton curry that is very popular. I however, am just there for the chicken and the rice!
For drinks, order the grass jelly (cincau or leong fun). They serve it cut up into cubes in a bowl, ice cold. A truly perfect way to end the meal.
